2nd Art Exhibition 2026
The Old Haa second art exhibition of the year opened on Sunday 25th of May and will run for 6 weeks until the 5th of July
Our new exhibition showcases three artist, each with their own take on capturing the beauty of Shetland.

Decorating the walls we have Michael Buchanan with his hand-cut, limited edition linocut prints capturing the evocative images and aspects of life in rural and coastal communities, in particular shining a light on the unique and special character of Shetland.

After graduating from Glasgow School of Art, and a period teaching in Glasgow, Michael moved to Burravoe and taught art in the local schools.
His connection to Shetland is deep rooted: his children were born here - and he learned a lot about practicality, resilience and community. The challenges and joys of living in the islands have been very influential on his life and outlook; and coastal imagery has become a life-long theme in his work.
Next we have Helen Laurenson designer and owner of Variorum: a homeware and gift brand she started in 2020 after graduating with a BA(Hons) degree in Design and Textiles.

"Being born in Shetland, it's easy to be inspired by the place I grew up. No matter where I am, I feel a strong tie to the coast and the nature, and this influences what I draw. When I studied away from home, having items around me that reminded me of a familiar place gave me comfort. I want to make that same connection for others through my art".

"All of my designs are hand drawn the old fashioned way, with a pencil, a pen, or some paint. I like to creat with traditional methods and then adapt them for digital printing for products."
"I hope you enjoy my work as much as I loved creating it."
And finally we have Sally Sugden exhibiting for the second time in the Old Haa.

"I’ve been spending the summer in Yell for the last few years. I’ve enjoyed crafting for a long time and have dabbled in various crafts until I found what I love best – I have Shetland to thank for guiding and inspiring me!"

"Its a joy spending time on the beach in Yell, irrespective of the weather!
I find lots of beach treasure locally and create a range of understated jewellery made with seaglass, sterling silver and cord. These are perfect little gifts or treats to take home to remind you of Shetland.
The glass has been washed smooth by the sea over many years. I carefully choose pieces to clean and polish them gently to bring out the colour. No pieces are shaped, they are all exactly as they were found, having been naturally tumbled by the sea."
The exhibition runs for 6 weeks from 25th May until the 5th July, be sure to visit!
